joker-dubstep

As you all know by now we here at Phoenicia Association keep Joker on massive rotation. He of course is a Dj as well as producer, so naturally there are some serious nuggets that he prefers to drop in his mixes. We just wanted to share some of the incredible jams this kid continues to melt our faces of with.

david-rodigan

There are obvious fixations that we have here at Phoenicia Association. One of those is of course good
dance music. Being that I spent my formative years spinning windmill kicks and fists in mosh pits, it’s fitting that I prefer my party tunes hard. It just so happens that my favorite music to groove with shares close ties with the heavy hitting riddims of Jamaican Dancehall. Now, for those unfamiliar with the legacy and culture of this genre I suggest wikipedia. I merely want to touch on one tiny piece of this enormous musical movement. That piece is none other than David Rodigan.

Inspired by a 1964 performance of My Boy Lolilpop by Millie Small he went on to gain a permanent position in 1979 at Capitol Radio and held that role for 11 years. Since then he has played on stations including Radio London, Kiss 100 and BFBS Radio 1. His passion and energy for music is unlike any other selector I have witnessed. Not only does he do his job of keeping the crowd hyped and dancing, he seamlessly educates the audience about each track. With a career spanning decades and a reputation that preceeds him always, it’s inspiring to see what real dance music is all about.

Burial’s back, apparently. Back from where? To come back, you’ve gotta go away first, and if this is anything to go by, London producer Will Bevan still haunts the same grey, midnight stairwells; hood up, eyes red, overheard heartbreak clattering at him off the concrete. And thank fuck for that – your ears should bow skywards every day in reverence of Bevan’s martyrdom, the first track he’s made on his own since 2007’s ‘Untrue’ torn from Hyperdub’s fifth anniversary comp ‘5’.

This track is a new personal favorite. enjoy.

Melvins_ChickenSwitch

The Melvins have been one of the most influential bands over the past twenty years. This is of course if you believe that Nirvana (no link should be necessary) single handedly changed music forever in the early nineties, which in turn spawned a generation of musicians forever stained with grunge. Listing Kurt Cobain as their “default roadie” in his early years, The Melvins were an incredible influence on the young man.

I have had the honor of being able to personally work alongside two members of the Melvins, Buzz “King Buzzo” Osborne and Dale “Bear” Crover. I was a photographer for a DVD recording of a live performance for Buzz and Dales alternate project Fantomas. This band is what one might call a “super Group” due to its lead man being none other than Mike Patton and founding drummer Dave Lombardo.

(Footage below not from actual DVD this is just a tribute)

Now kids with the history lesson out of the way we can finally get to the goodies, and also the reason for this post. The Melvins have recently released a highly anticipated remix album called “Chicken Switch.” Never staying within the confines of standard operating procedure the project came with a twist. Unlike usual remix cds where the remixer is given a single track to work with, each remixer was given a full album to work with and pull from to create their track. With Nineteen studio albums to select  from, not to mention the wealth of material from singles and compilations, these producers put in some work.

Theo Jansen has been creating wind walking examples of life called “Strandbeest” since 1990. What was at first a rudimentary breed has slowly evolved into a generation of machines that are able to react to their environment: “over time, these skeletons have become increasingly better at surviving the elements such as storms and water and eventually I want to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.”

Constructed as intricate assemblages of piping, wood, and wing-like sails, Jansen’s creatures are constantly evolving and have become excellently adapted to their sandy beach environment. The creatures sport legs, which “prove to be more efficient on sand than wheels . . . they don’t need to touch every inch of the ground along the way, as a wheel has to”.

The creatures are also able to store air pressure and use it to drive them in the absence of wind: “Self-propelling beach animals like Animaris Percipiere have a stomach. This consists of recycled plastic bottles containing air that can be pumped up to a high pressure by the wind.” Theo’s more sophisticated creations are able to detect once they have entered the water and walk away from it, and one species will even anchor itself to the earth if it senses a storm approaching. Watching a herd of them crossing a windswept beach would certainly be a sight to behold.

09-17-09 Boutique

Article written for the State Press on september 17th 2009 by Alexys Bahn.

Create, innovate, educate, associate.

A new central Phoenix menswear boutique, Phoenicia Association, operates by this motto. Created by Jeff Mann and Kyle Simone. Phoenicia Association started about two years ago, and officially opened its doors Aug. 7.

Simone said the basic idea behind Phoenicia Association was to bring fashion forward brands from around the world to the Valley.

“We create with the artists. We innovate with our style,” he said. “We educate our customers with trends. We associate with the community and everyone involved in the process.”

The boutique, at 821 N. Third St. in Phoenix, is minimalistic. The design of the store showcases the clothes as art.

It’s not the aesthetic that is focused on, but high fashion, high quality of the brands that Mann and Simone choose.

“What draws customers in is the quality and exclusivity,” Simone said.

The shop offers products that are unique and functional, he said.

“The jeans here are not only going to look good on you but are manufactured well and will wear well and last,” he said.

Aside from offering brands such as April77 Records and Hixsept from France and Dearly Departed from Phoenix, Phoenicia showcases local artists as well.

The southern part of the store is left empty for artists to rent the space.

“We built a very minimal design aesthetic and allowed it to be amorphous, meaning we can change whatever, and adapt to the artists featured and the change of season with garments,” Simone said.

Phoenicia Association adds to the downtown community by providing a gallery to showcase work, connecting with various mediums of art and providing a space for artists to flourish and gain exposure, he said.

“We also bring in artists from around the country, and world, to show what inspires fellow like-minded individuals around the globe,” he said.
Because of its aesthetic, “Phoenicia is as adaptable as Phoenix itself,” Simone said. “It is a lifestyle. A lot of the garments we carry here are because of our travels. I, myself, have spent a lot of time around the world, and this is a major factor in why we decide to carry certain brands.”

Many of the brands seen in Phoenicia Association are unique to the boutique and were acquired through personal connections of Simone and Mann.

“Everything in here is something I would wear every single day. I choose brands to carry what I, myself, would want to rock,” Simone said.

Phoenicia Association got its name from the Phoenician Empire that was known for its cultivation of the arts. It just happened that it was also the namesake of the city the business was created in.

Simone said the unique thing about the boutique is that it is not a “dime a dozen.” The apparel Phoenicia showcases is not found in strip malls or big capital companies or commercialized shops, he said.

“We looked around [for a location] and said where is it all happening? Where is my demographic? Downtown,” he said. ”Downtown is the place to be at. Downtown is the only place to be at, and what better way to show that then to put my business here?”
