Recently stumbled across this new video/song from ESKMO entitled “Cloudlight” and it immediately caught my attention. I am always impressed with his use of “found sounds” mixed with heavy bass weight, and this track is no exception. Rolling in deep he colorfully decorates the aural space with bits of noise found from everyday life, which brings a tremendous amount of natural warmth. These sounds mixed with an almost tribal march of minimal percussion and thick low end, make for an ethereal ride. Check out the video below and be sure to download the track “Come Back” from his latest release on Ninja Tune records.

We keep it moving here at Phoenicia Association, and in following with that practice we decided to get some new paint on the walls. Our good friend and Cash Crop representative, Andy B. stopped by to lend us his artistic skills. We now have an incredible original piece gracing our walls just in time for this new season. We have plenty more additions coming to P.A. so be sure to stay locked in and locked on.

This is my first, proper DJ mix-tape. It’s been both a long time coming and in the making (I was mapping it out as far back as June of last year…) and I can’t tell you what a huge weight off my shoulders it is to have it done and out there. It’s something I needed to do. Now I can move on to the next one, and the next one, etc.

I’m a huge sucker for concept albums. It is definitely a love letter or ode, whatever you want to call it. I’ve always loved that quote from High Fidelity: “What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?”

It doesn’t matter where it’s from, what language it is in, or what style of music…there’s a reason the majority of the songs in the world are about love, desire, cheating, breakups, and heartbreak. These are some of the most universal emotions and experience in our lives. It’s funny, because when you go through something like a breakup, your heart is hurting, and you’re very much in that place, you’d think the last thing you’d want to hear is anything from The Cure, or “Ooh Baby Baby” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. You can’t help it, though. This ends up being ALL you want to listen to, because it’s mirroring/echoing what you’re feeling inside, and maybe saying the things you can’t, or don’t want to. Music is therapy. My therapy.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP, the first film by renowned graffiti artist Banksy, became the hottest ticket at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where it made its world debut. Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post—hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric French shop keeper turned documentary maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner – with spectacular results. The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. As Banksy describes it, “It’s basically the story of how one man set out to film the un—filmable. And failed” (Excerpt originally posted by Known Gallery)

PECULIAR ELECTRONIC ROCKER RELEASES ANTICIPATED DEBUT ALBUM

March 9, 2010 (Phoenix, Arizona) — The electronic rock debut “Albatross” from producer/singer/songwriter Jonathan Sakas will be available at JonathanSakas.com, online through retailers like iTunes, and at Arizona stores like Hoodlums or Stinkweeds starting March 30th.  In addition to being self released and promoted, “Albatross” was written, performed, and produced entirely by the artist, giving the ten songs an intriguing sound that has been propelling a rapidly expanding fan base and critics into pop culture pandemonium.

Jonathan Sakas is an artist who takes risks and sticks out from the crowd, the type of musician you do not want to miss.  He has enough potential to be a breakout star of 2010, so it is no surprise he delivers consistently throughout the eclectic “Albatross”.  The record consists of ten new songs that are eccentric yet familiar, pulsating with futuristic synthesizers, superb sequencing, and dark arrangements that create a captivating soundscape.  Arizona favorite Larry Elyea (Jimmy Eat World, A Life of Science) recorded, mixed, and mastered the project, yielding an exciting sound that has everyone lining up to get their own copy of “Albatross” on March 30th, 2010.

My Friend Paul Kos is a talented artist who has been working in a pretty cool medium lately. Check out the brief description of the process below and be on the look out for Pauls show in the gallery soon.

” I started experimenting with some 3-D aspects to encaustic art. And with this I wanted to create an object protruding from the space in a grotesque manner. I started with a basic encaustic wax that is clear in pigment and began heating it. Then next step was to add damar resin to it, which is a tree sap from india that makes the wax harder and holds shape and form better. I added a yellow and red pigment to the wax once both of the elements combined. Once the wax coloring process is complete, its on to creating the piece. I started with a wooden box and added the mound you see in the piece. I did this by crumpling up some paper towel and used wax to hold it down. Slowly I built up layers and layers of wax to create the right shapes that I wanted. When the right form was set for what I was looking for, I used black oil base paint to cover the entire area. This helps fill in those spots with another color and give it the shadow feel to it. After that I used paint thinner to remove most of the black. This helps leave behind only small traces of black, but it gives it that right touch of contrast to it. Once I have removed all the paint I want, I use microfiber clothes to polish the wax to smooth it out and give it the finished look I want. This turned out to be a great piece and something I will continue to work in experimenting with shapes and space.” – Paul Kos

Here’s a pieces that he recently did for me as a gift.

As you may or may not know Phoenicia Association enjoys playing music, especially for events with fellow local business owners. Recently we had the opportunity to play alongside the uber talented Djentrification, at Way Cool Hair Salon for their fashion show. Now let me explain something, Phoenicia will get up there and drop a wide range of dubstep tracks most of which will be digital and the kids will get their fill of wobbles and bass. Whereas the talented Djentrification, with his enormous collection of rare vinyls, and 45’s, will “freestyle” a set that will take you across the entire world and back spanning decades of music. From a single mix this man is able to fill a role as musical “teacher” of sorts showcasing what a true audiophile can do with a crate full of dusty records. He never ceases to amaze me, not only with his selection skill, but for his sheer love of the music and the energy that brings to all his sets. So this blog is mostly just a thank you and a reminder that real disc jockeys do still exist, you can find them at the donut spot at the end of the night.

Located at 164 Allen Street New York city, TEDDY BOY is an incredible mens and womens retail boutique. Luckily for us, a friend of mine, Casey RAnderson Lives and works in NYC as a Filmmaker/Photog/Fashionisto/Overall badass dude. He recently shot a short teaser for the Teddy Boy shop and it turned out real smooth with a simple classic feel. I always enjoy sharing the work of friends and fellow associates, just wanted to pass this little gem along to keep the inspiration flowing. Easy.
